Neuroimaging evaluation of unilateral asymptomatic carotid plaque ulceration: preliminary results of the Carotid Artery Multimodality imaging Prognostic study

Abstract Background Carotid plaque ulceration has been associated with imaging characteristics of high risk future events (plaque vulnerability) in patients a significant degree stenosis, while little is known about its role lesser stenosis and association markers vascular inflammation. Purpose We evaluated the between vulnerability inflammation detected by different tests. Methods One hundred seven unilateral asymptomatic carotid artery (40–60% Doppler ultrasound (DUS)), enrolled ongoing Artery Multimodality Prognostic (CAMP) study were prospectively computed tomography angiography (CTA), contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance (CEMRA) and, subgroup patients, 18-F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission (PET). Plaque was CTA. Variables are expressed as median (1st–3rd quartiles) number (percentages).The Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney Chi square Fisher's exact test used to associations among variables. Results An ulcerated present 35% (n=33) those undergoing CTA (n=94), intraplaque hemorrhage lipid-rich necrotic core 9% 15% CEMRA.
